I am a Canadian artist with my studio located in eastern Ontario. I studied as an artist in my early years of formal fine art education (BFA Queens University). For a time I worked in a public gallery and then a commercial gallery, later transitioning to teaching art at the high school level. Teaching was a fulfilling career as I was able to work with teens developing their creative skills.
Over the last 10 years, I transitioned from education to establish my own full time art career. It was a realization that being a full time artist was only in my control if I took the initiative. I have found excellent mentors and have joined networks of artists, who like me, are creating art.
Inspiration comes from the overwhelming beauty in nature. I also see how paradoxes surface through life experiences. Those two aspects often merge onto a canvas to explore bigger issues and questions.
I continue to work in acrylic and mixed mediums while I primarily enjoys the exploration of colour and texture. I am self-motivated and I enjoy the process of thinking and creating in my studio. I am inspired when I looked at art in galleries and I follow artists on social media that engage my attention. I admired the courage, confidence, self-motivation, initiative, and skill that I see in professional artists world-wide. I wanted that for myself. As I continually work to improve my process and develop my style, my following on social media continues to grow, and the feedback is positive. My work is now showing galleries and on tours. I enjoy my studio time and find it is a place of calm, thinking, processing, and creating. I’m very grateful for my artistic journey.
As a Canadian artist, I draw inspiration from nature to create abstract paintings, photos and wet feltings. My work is characterized by colour, textures, and patterns that reflect the contradictions and complexities of the natural world.
I use my senses to absorb the beauty and power of nature, and then translate these experiences into abstract images that evoke a sense of calm amidst the chaos in the world. When I look at big skies and powerful mountains, rolling plains, or the force of the ocean, impressions are left. I get a fresh perspective of the grandeur and the power of nature. But when I narrow in on the details, I see glorious colour combinations, patterns and shapes, motion and textures, and this inspires me to see beyond the photo picture of what is before me. Sometimes it is silencing. Moments like this inspire my art work. The colours I choose to layer and the textures I put down grow together to become one.
As images become abstracted, they begin to take on smaller details of the bigger picture. As I create a piece, it often becomes much more than an exploration of texture and colour. Through my art, I explore themes such as light and darkness, safety and vulnerability, invincibility and fragility, hope and despair, and faith and disbelief. My hope is that I can create art that is not only visually striking but also emotionally impactful, evoking a sense of energy, emotion, and curiosity, from those who view my work.
When I create, I use only professional grade materials. If I am taking my time to make a quality piece of work, it must be visually pleasing, but it must also endure time. I value professionalism and quality when creating my work. This means artist grade materials are a must. I also value good customer service. I want to treat people the way I would like to be treated. I want my patrons to be happy with their purchases and enjoy in perpetuity what they see in my creations. I can work with potential buyers and collectors to check the display of a painting in a room, and sometimes this means doing it electronically. I am happy to answer questions.
PAINTINGS
My paintings are created using the highest artist grade paints, paper, texture mediums, inks, wood, canvas and stretchers. Every canvas and painting surface is gallery quality. All canvases and boards are primed before I start working. Canvas is wrapped around the stretcher frames and stapled on the back. The canvases are wired and ready to hang. The majority of my stretcher frames are 1.5 inches deep which means they do not need a frame for displaying. Some work is done on wooden framed surfaces, again 1.5 inches deep and gallery quality. Occasionally a painting may show better in a frame. Framing suggestions can be discussed; however, framing is not included in the listed retail price for paintings. My paintings are signed and dated only on the back of the canvas. I will sign the front if the request is made prior to shipping or pick up. All work comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.
WET FELTING
My wet felted creations are made from the highest grades of wool, silk and natural fibers. Every piece made is gallery quality. All flat images come framed. Framing suggestions can be discussed. Three-dimensional objects come packaged in a gift box, and they are then shipped in a sturdy cardboard box. Signatures are on the back of flat images and on the inside of three-dimensional objects. Art pieces come with a Certificate of Authenticity.
